Lesson 1: Shutter Speed

Any time there is movement in your photo, you need to think about shutter speed.

Do you want the water in that flowing stream to look like it is running fast? You'll need blurry water for that.  Choose a slow shutter like 1/20.

Or, would you rather every drop in that fountain was crystal clear?  You'll need a fast shutter for that like 1/500.

Take a look at the water in this photo.  It was taken with a slow shutter speed.

We will talk about the accidental  change in brightness those setting will cause later.  At the moment, just think about blurring or freezing movement with your shutter speed.

Slow shutter speeds blur any movement (1/20).  Fast shutter speeds freeze any movement (1/500).

Easy hey?!
